Direct-fit tie rod end designed for 1970–1991 Chevrolet and GMC trucks and SUVs. This replacement installs at the steering arm to restore precise steering response, reduce play, and maintain proper alignment. Suggested Tools:
- Jack and jack stands or lift
- Lug wrench or impact gun
- Wrenches and sockets (including appropriate size for castle nut/lock nut)
- Ball joint / tie rod end puller (pickle fork optional)
- Torque wrench
- Grease gun (if greaseable)
- Marker or paint pen for reference alignment
Instructions:
- Park vehicle on level ground, loosen lug nuts, raise vehicle and secure on jack stands; remove front wheel.
- Mark the position of the old tie rod end on the threaded portion to preserve alignment reference.
- Loosen the lock nut on the inner tie rod and unthread to free the outer tie rod end.
- Remove the castle nut or retaining fastener at the steering arm and separate the tie rod end from the steering arm using a puller or appropriate tool.
- Unthread the old tie rod end from the inner tie rod using the marks made earlier to retain approximate toe alignment.
- Thread the new tie rod end onto the inner tie rod to the marked position, then insert the stud into the steering arm taper.
- Install and torque the castle nut or lock nut to the manufacturer’s specification; if applicable, install cotter pin.
- Tighten the inner lock nut against the new tie rod end, then grease the fitting if the part is greaseable.
- Reinstall the wheel, lower the vehicle, torque lug nuts to specification, and perform a professional wheel alignment as soon as possible.
